For Tired People Everywhere…

July 28, 2016 by rebeccanightsong

Even writers have days like that.

You know those days that you just have to drag yourself to work.

It’s true…we writers work for ourselves. But as bosses, we can be pretty mean. Hard-driving task-masters who can make even a wet noodle whipping look dangerous.

The kind of a boss that makes you work through lunch and can’t understand it when you want to go home at a decent hour. The kind who times your bathroom breaks.

And then there are those days…you know those days. When you’re not exactly sick, but you feel so “blah.”

The kind of day where you spill coffee on yourself twice, and you forget to lock the door after you leave the house, and you seriously need a “reset” button. I’m sure sleep-deprived moms everywhere know what I mean.

I’m having one of those days right now.

So, because I’m a writer, and I like making magic with my pen, I’ve created this snazzy meme for you.

Dear Self,

Use it for those days when you just have to keep going forward, even when everything in you just wants to curl up and take a cat nap…but you can’t because little miss cutest-toddler-ever needs her lunch, or because some small-fry who shall not be named just tried to flush the pet hamster again.

Use it proudly. Print it and put it on the refrigerator if you have to.

Shucks. I say get it made into a beach towel so you can wear it around your neck like a cape. Add a tiara if it’s a really bad day.

You know you want to.

You know you deserve it…for showing up every day, rain or shine.

Boardrooms and Birdsong: What A Christian Romance Writer Learned About Why She Writes

July 19, 2016 by rebeccanightsong

I thought when I published my first novel that I’d be scared.

I thought I’d be biting my nails and cringing behind a huge coffee mug, trying to convince myself to open one eye and look at the reviews.

Writing a book and putting it out into the world is kind of like going to a business meeting in only a bikini. And for this introvert, I wouldn’t feel comfortable on the beach in a bikini, much less in a boardroom where everyone else is in suits and dress pumps.

Because a book will tell you how I see the world. It will offer little hints into the things that I struggle with, or the things that make me sad. My imperfections. You, the reader, could pick me apart. Both for my art, and for my nakedness.

So vulnerable…so naked…to write a book and put it out there for EVERYONE to read.

I thought I would panic. Change my name.  Move to Zimbabwe. Develop a nervous twitch or nine.

But that’s not what happened. I sent the book out there, and then I discovered why I write.

I write because I have a song.  And a bird who has a song can’t be silent.

I write because I want my song to go out into the world, and I hope with everything within me that it brightens someone’s day.

I launched my book and didn’t bite my nails or panic.

Nope.  It felt like Christmas. It felt like I was sending a gift into the world. Not because the book is so fabulous or grand, but because it has laughter in it…I hope!

Why do I write?

Because the world needs laughter. And sunshine. Now, more than ever.

And if my little book is just one drop of sunshine in a dark world, that will make me happy.

I write because the world needs more happy. Because I want to make people happy. Even if it’s only for the few hours they are reading.

I can’t be happy…until I make you happy, too!

Who of You by Worrying Can Add a Single Hour?

July 18, 2016 by rebeccanightsong

-See the birds of the sky, that they don't sow, neither. do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father. feeds them.---Matthew 6-26

God will provide for us, just as easily as He provides for the birds of the air.

Matthew 6:26-27 says: “Look at the birds of the air:  They do not sow or reap or gather into barns—and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his lifespan?”

And yet, we worry. But all the while, Jesus is whispering:

“Look at the birds of the air.  Look at how I feed them.  Have you ever noticed how fat they are? How shining and beautiful their feathers?  How free and easy their flights?  Have you ever noticed how quickly they find shelter in storms, or how easily they ride on the wind? Have you noticed how songs of praise pour from their mouths every morning and every evening, and even during rainy days? You can live in that same freedom and joy. If you will just trust Me to provide for you.”

Did God Need to Rest?

July 9, 2016 by rebeccanightsong

-And God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.--Genesis 1-31

What did God do just before He rested?

He looked around.  He saw all He had made.  And He enjoyed it.  He said it was good.

Enjoying the fruit of your hands…enjoying the results of all your hard work is an essential element to resting the way God designed us to rest.

God didn’t need to rest.  He never gets tired. But what He did do was take time to enjoy His creation.

And…by the way…His creation?  That’s us.  He took time to enjoy us.

So the next time you have the opportunity to rest on the Sabbath, rest like God does.  Enjoy His creation. Enjoy your creation, too–the work of your hands.  And most of all, enjoy Him.
